Help: Search ResultsThe results from an individual index search are displayed on this results page. A summary of what you searched for is included at the top of the page, along with the number of results which have been retrieved. If you have clicked the More.. link on a Quick Search or Search All Indexes results page you will also see this page. However, the page title will reflect the content type you have chosen.
How do I start a new search?Either enter your new search terms in the Quick Search box or click the All Indexes link or an individual index link in the right navigation panel to open a fresh search page and carry out a new search. Any search terms from your current search will not be retained. How do I modify my search? If you have performed an All Indexes or individual index search you can use the Modify search link to return to the Search All Indexes page. Your original search terms will be intact so you can edit them and re-execute your search. Note that this link is not available following a Quick Search as this search is available on most pages in C19 Index. How do I save a search? If you have performed an All Indexes or individual index search you can store a search in the Saved searches area of My Archive for use at a later date by clicking the Save search terms to My Archive link. You will be prompted to give your search a name to identify it easily in the list of saved searches. Note that this link is not available following a Quick Search. How do I change the order in which my results are sorted? If you have performed an individual index search the order in which your results are displayed will depend on the option you chose on that search page. If you performed a Quick Search or All Indexes search, the default order depends on the content type.
The results page will be refreshed with the results displayed in your chosen order. If you performed a Quick Search or All Indexes search, the default order will be:
Note that Relevance is not available. If you performed an individual index search the following sort options are available on the Search Results page. The default sort order is indicated. Nineteenth Century Short Title Catalogue and The Nineteenth Century microfiche project
American Periodicals Series
British Periodicals
Periodicals Index Online
Poole's Index to Periodical Literature
Wellesley Index
House of Commons Parliamentary Papers
U.S. Congressional Serial Set
Archive Finder
Palmer's Index to The Times
By default, the earliest results are shown at the beginning of the list; you can quickly view results at the end of the list by re-sorting your results in reverse chronological order so that the most recent results appear at the top of the list. How does relevancy ranking work?Relevance ranking works according to where the search terms entered in the Keyword search field are found within a record. It is only the terms in the Keyword search field that are used to determine relevance, so if this field is left empty then your results are sorted in chronological order. How relevant a result is depends on several factors:
Note that when you choose to sort your results by relevance we only return the top 1000 records. The following fields are weighted for relevance in the individual index searches (note that relevance sorting is not available from the Search Results following a search using Quick search or Search All Indexes): Nineteenth Century Short Title Catalogue, The Nineteenth Century microfiche project:Subject, then Title, then Author. American Periodicals Series, Periodicals Index Online, British Periodicals, Poole's Index to Periodical Literature, Wellesley Index:Article title, then Author. House of Commons Parliamentary Papers:Subject term, then Title. U.S. Congressional Serial Set:Document Subject term, then Title. Archive Finder:Index term, then Repository details, then Collection name. Palmer's Index to The Times:Main heading. How do I change the number of results per page?By default, 20 results are displayed on a page. You can choose whether to display 20 or 50 results on the Search Results page using the Display link.
The Search Results page will change to reflect the option you have chosen. How do I select a result? You can select results in the Search Results and transfer them to the Marked List:
The selected results will be transferred to your Marked List. Each result that has been added will have their Add to Marked List box checked and a darker background tint. To remove results from the Marked List:
When a result is removed from the Marked List the Add to Marked List box will be cleared and darker background tint removed. You can click the Marked List link to view the current entries in your Marked List at any time. How do I display the full record? To view the full record for an item in the Search Results, click the hyperlinked result title. I am a joint JSTOR/C19 Index subscriber. How can I view JSTOR full text for Periodicals Index Online results in C19 Index? If your library/institution participates in the JSTOR Arts & Sciences I, Arts & Sciences II, Arts & Sciences III, Arts & Sciences IV, and/or Arts & Sciences Complement Collections, you can enable linking to JSTOR full text from Periodicals Index Online results within C19 Index by completing the linking form. Once you have enabled JSTOR linking, you will see a View article in JSTOR link next to entries in the Search Results where JSTOR full text is available. Clicking this link will open the full text of the item in a separate window. How can I move between pages of results?Where there is more than one page of results, C19 Index provides a link to each page. Click a number to display the results listed on that page. If the number of results pages exceeds 10, a Next link will be displayed. Click the Next link to view the next page of results, e.g. if you are viewing page 4 of the results and click this link page 5 will be displayed, and so on. Click the Previous link to view the previous page of results. |
